Outlook Express 5 Setup

These pages are designed as a quick reference if you are experiencing problems with obtaining your 
e-mail from froggy.net.au using Microsoft Outlook Express 5. This document may provide a solution to your  problems if you are: 

  • not receiving your E-mail
  • getting Internet Mail returned to you
  • people cannot reply to messages you have sent them or you
  • continue to receive the same mail over and over.
Microsoft Outlook Express is a part of the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 suite. It's a fully functional E-mail and News client designed to make communicating with other Internet Users easier through use of a simple, yet intuitive interface. E-Mail and News postings can be sent and received, replied to and forwarded. 
 

Outlook express 5 can be access from 3 locations.  The first is the icon in the Quick Launch bar next to the Start menu.  The second is the Outlook Express icon that is normally on the desktop.  The third is an icon in the start menu under programs.

1. Open Outlook Express .

2. If Outlook prompts you to connect to the Internet, click on Cancel. You do not need to be connected to  the Internet to configure your Outlook settings. From the drop-down menu marked "Tools" select "Accounts." 

3. The account management section of Outlook Express will be opened.  If you already have an account for E-mail in Outlook Express setup, and you are experiencing difficulties  with mail, click on the Tab marked "Mail" and click on the button marked "Properties." If you are 
configuring a new mail account from scratch click here

4. In the name field below you enter the name that you wish to be displayed on emails when you send mail through froggy.net.au.

Enter Your information into the spaces provided.

The Mail Account name is how Outlook Express groups your E-mail account's settings. This name can be anything you choose since any person you send and receive mail to will not see this name. 

The "Name" field is the name that will be displayed when people receive mail from you. 

The "Organization" field need only be filled out if you are using Outlook Express for commercial purposes. 

E-mail Address
Your E-Mail address is your User name [eg: jsmith] followed by froggy.net.au's domain name [froggy.net.au]. 
Separated by an '@' symbol. jsmith@froggy.net.au

Leave the Reply Address blank unless you are checking your E-mail from another E-mail address that the one you are sending from. 

Leave the Tick Box checked for Include this account when doing a full Send and Receive.
If you disable this option, Outlook Express will not check your E-mail when you click on Send and Receive. 

5. Next click on the tab marked Servers.

 

6. Enter the incoming and outgoing mail server names:

Incoming mail server name :mail.froggy.net.au
outoging mail server name : mail.froggy.net.au

Please ensure that these details are entered using lower case letters. 

The Account Name field under the Incoming Mail Server settings is your froggy.net.au username 
[eg: jsmith]. 

Your froggy.net.au Password should be entered into the Password field. 

7. Next click on the Connection Tab. 

8.. If you are using a modem to access your E-mail, then the radio button next to Always connect to this account using should be checked. 

In order to access your E-mail using the phone line, a Dial-Up Networking connection needs to be selected.

9. Click on the drop down list to select your froggy.net.au Dial Up Networking Connection. 

The Security Tab need not be looked at since it is beyond the scope of this document, so skip directly to the tab marked "Advanced." 

10. The Server Port Numbers should be left as their default values, which are: SMTP: 25 POP3: 110 

The froggy.net.au Mail server does not require a secure (SSL) connection, so leave both of these Tick Boxes unchecked. 

At time the mail server can tend to be busy, making the amount of time it takes to contact the mail server 
longer. It's best to set the "Server Timeouts" slider to around three (3) minutes. 

If your mail is duplicating over and over, check that "Leave a copy of messages on server" is disabled. Next time you check your mail, the messages will be deleted from the server. 

Click here to test your Outlook Express E-mail Account settings.

By clicking on Apply or OK Outlook Express will save any changes to your mail account that you may have altered. Try sending and receiving your e-mail again. If the problem you were experiencing still persists, please contact your froggy.net.au Technical support representative. 

Configuring a new mail account.

If you are configuring a new e-mail account in Outlook Express, please follow these directions. Upon completion you should have an operational E-mail account first time. Open Outlook Express, then select Accounts from the pull-down menu marked "Tools." 

 
The Account Management section will be opened. To create a new mail account, click on the tab 
marked "Mail," then click on the "Add" button and select "Mail...." 


This action will open the new mail account wizard. 

Step 1.

Enter your name the way you would like other Internet users to see when you send e-mail messages. 

Click on Next.


Step 2.

Enter your E-mail address. 

Your E-Mail address is your User name [eg: jsmith] followed by froggy.net.au's domain name [froggy.net.au]. Separated by an '@' symbol. jsmith@froggy.net.au

Click on Next. 


Step 3.

froggy.net.au's incoming mail server is a POP3 server. Select POP3 from the option list. 

The name of the Incoming server is : mail.froggy.net.au
The name of the Outgoing server is : mail.froggy.net.au

Enter this in lower case letters, then click Next. 


Step 4.

The log on details are the same as when you dial into froggy.net.au . Your username should be entered in lower-case letters in the "POP Account" name field and your password entered in the "Password" field. 

Click Next. 


Step 5.

The Outlook Account has now been completed click "Finish" to save the new account.

Testing your Outlook Settings.
After having followed the steps from either of the previous sections to configure Outlook Express E-mail, close down the program by clicking on the File Menu and selecting Exit

Then launch Outlook Express by clicking on the Taskbar button. 

 
If you chose not to install the Windows 95 Desktop Enhancements and Shell Integration, you will need to double-click on the Outlook Express shortcut icon on your Windows 95 Desktop. Make sure your modem is turned on and connected to the phone line and your computer. 
When Outlook Express has opened, it will ask you to connect to the Internet by entering your username and password. Enter these details in lower case letters and click on OK. This will establish a Dial-Up Networking connection to froggy.net.au.
